This is a small ornate black gutta percha wall hung photo frame. In the mid-19th century gutta percha was a commodity that enabled electrical communications to encircle the globe for the first time. It was perfect for insulating copper wire laid on the seabed. The latex was harvested from a Southeast Asian tree, palaquium gutta. Gutta percha wasn’t only used by the technologists of the day, its properties were suitable for jewellery and even golf balls! It was also ideal for a range of homeware including picture frames.

The photo in the frame suggests a happy grandmother and two daughters, probably in their 50s, smartly dressed for a wedding or birthday. Taken in August 1926 (see writing on the back). The daughters are bang on trend with their tall hats, calf length dresses and coats and strappy shoes with a bit of a heel. Whilst gran is so last century! You may wish to add your own picture. The card at the back of the frame lifts back.
