This striking figure of a young man is hand carved by the woodworkers from the Baule region of the Ivory Coast. He sports a tropical pith helmet, vivid orange shirt and blue trousers. The photograph shows a crack in the wood running from the right ear up to the top of the pith helmet. This is an old crack and the surrounding area remains solid.
Sourced in France, the country has long had involvement with its colonies in Africa, including the Ivory Coast. This item has some age and may well have been taken home by a French bureaucrat in the 1950s.
The Ivory Coast achieved independence in 1960 whilst maintaining close links with France.
