Hand carved by the woodworking Baule people of the Ivory Coast, this painted figure is wearing an orange uniform and white tropical Pith helmet. His stance suggests that he is making his mind up about something.
Sourced in France, the country has long had involvement with its colonies in Africa, including the Ivory Coast. This item has some age and may well have been taken home by a French bureaucrat in the 1950s.
The Ivory Coast achieved independence in 1960 whilst maintaining close links with France.
